Evergreen dioecious shrub, or small tree in mild areas. Young shoots & leaf stalk reddish. Leaves glabrous when mature, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 3-15 cm long, 1-5.5 cm wide, toothed, dark glossy green above, paler beneath. Small yellowish-green flowers 5-6 mm across in axillary or terminal clusters in May-June. Fruit globose, about 5 mm across, black. May be cut back to the ground in cold climate.
