Evergreen or semi-evergreen climber. Leaves trifoliate, long stalked, 6-16 cm long, 3-14 cm wide. Leaflets glabrous, light green, ovate, margin undulate or lobed, apex emarginate. Flowers apetalous in axillary racemes in April. Female flowers conspicuous with 3 purplish brown sepals, about 1.5-2 cm across. Male flowers smaller, pale purple, at the end of the inflorescence. Fruit ovoid, fleshy, purple-pink.
